Kingdom of Denmark, 16th century. The Island of Hven is handed over by King Frederick II to the most renowned astronomer in Europe, Tycho Brahe, to build an observatory. Only Jep the hunchback is pleased at the arrival of this frowning, nightsky-gazing man and soon becomes his jester. During the day he gathers the leftovers from his master’s dining table and entertains the guests; at night, he learns to read and write, studies Latin and becomes numerate.
Because it is only by stargazing that Jep manages to forget about his deformity. But history mocks men’s hopes. One unlucky day the king dies and it is clear at once that his successor is not keen on Tycho.
This skilled blend of fiction and history brings the limelight back to an extraordinary and terrible century and to one of its forgotten protagonists – a man without whom modern astronomy would never have been born.
The author Francesco Ongaro was born in Brescia in 1966. He has a degree in physics and works as a teacher. He lives in Franciacorta.
