Synopsis
An anonymous note tied to a carrier pigeon’s foot is neither a request for help from a castaway nor an animal activist’s practical joke, also because managing to capture one of these intelligent animals is not easy and can be done by few. The clues in the message take Federico, a brilliant ethology student and the pigeon’s owner, to the body of a man brutally murdered in his home. The only particular signs: a basket for pigeons covering the dead man’s head and the reference in the note to some seeds used as bird-food that only experts would know about. Luckily, Federico can count on his prof., a maestro of animal sciences and of life. Together they can try to understand what the murderer is trying to communicate. Because the police, as usual, is fumbling around in the dark, while the murderer continues to strike and leave his indecipherable messages. The investigation leads to the world of pigeon fanciers and their clubs. In particular, the clubs that organize the competitions for the best carrier pigeons are investigated. It seems to be an innocent world up to the point that the vast body of financial interests involved is discovered.
For Federico and the professor, who work with the police as scientific consultants, a voyage begins through the familiar world of pigeon fanciers and through the much more disturbing passages of a criminal mind. And how can they even imagine tracking down the guilty party if they don’t have the help of their animal friends, who once again demonstrate they are more reliable and faithful than man?
The author Danilo Mainardi, ethologist, ecologist and popular science divulger, is professor of Behavioural Ecology at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He is honorary president of the LIPU (Italian League for the Protection of Birds), member of the National Academy of Sciences (dei Quaranta) and former president of the International Ethological Society. He collaborates with Corriere della Sera, Il Sole-24 Ore, and the monthly Airone. He is a regular guest of Piero Angela in Superquark. Cairo Editore has published his Nella mente degli animali, now in its fifth edition, and La bella zoologia.
