The pope and his Jewish friend

This is a marvellous story, so lovely it seems to spring from a writer’s imagination. Instead, it is a true story about two youngsters, a Christian and a Jew, the closest of friends, who grew up together during the Twenties and Thirties in the small Polish city of Wadowice, The school, their schoolmates, the teachers, the crushes, the friendships and the enmities are those of two normal young boys, but the time they are living in is not normal. Anti-Semitism, the Nazi occupation, war and deportations will change their lives forever. Still, the bond between them and their shared memories will turn out to be stronger than anything else, and that is how after so many years Karol Wojtyla and his childhood friend, Jerzy Kluger, are face to face once again. This meeting between a Catholic and a Jew will become a universal message about a possible dialogue.
